I want to pay & he knows this but will go as far as arriving early to pay before the meal. We are both college students (but his money is his own, not his parents') & the restaurants he chooses are not cheap. I know that he uses money as a way of showing he cares but I feel like in some way it is inappropriate. Thoughts?
I feel like in most ways I’m broke so I don’t know how to answer this other than, “god damn, you lucky girl.”
He’s being a gentleman, and he’s also most likely trying to assert his manhood. There may be residual insecurities about how the breakup ended, and he’s dealing with those by paying.
But like with all friends, the only thing you can do to resolve an issue is talk about it. Make him aware how uncomfortable it makes you. Not just, “oh, let me split!” actually tell him how uneasy you’re feeling about it and hopefully he will see your side.
