Anonymous asked: No one may care what you wear to work explicitly but what you wear still sends a message in the workplace to everyone around you. Sadly this is especially true because you are a woman. As a long-time follower I've gathered you are smart and good at your job, so why are you dressing like a sexualised lumberjack? People will to see you like one, and you won't get taken seriously. - From a fellow young professional woman.
For some fields, you’re correct.
I’ve worked in offices where “sexualized” outfits would have sent you straight home, so I didn’t dress like that.
But I work in a creative field now where some girls are sexy and some girls wear sweatpants. And when clients come in, you can bet your bottom dollar I look like a star, but on a rainy Tuesday when it’s just me and my team? I’m not dressing for the office, I’m dressing for fun. I’m fortunate that I work in an office where this hasn’t held me back. It’s sad that that isn’t the case for all workplaces.
Plus, I don’t know that lumberjack is any sexier than office attire. While I have the creative freedom and while I report to a strong woman who continues to trust me with our largest account, I’ll continue to enjoy my sartorial freedom.
