Anonymous asked: First I'll join the vast majority of your readers in praising you for an awesome blog - I know your blog is primarily for you, but it has gven me and probably many others some confidence, a kick in the butt, inspiration, or whatever you want to call it. Thank you for helping get me out of a rut! Second, what are your tips for a young gal heading off to Europe on her own for a few months? I'm planning on channeling bold moves October to start the trip off right! Thanks beautiful:)
For a few months? You lucky dog!
First, buy Fly Solo: The 50 Best Places On Earth For a Girl To Travel Alone. I’ve had that book since 2007 and it’s been extremely helpful in my travels. And if nothing else, it’s an entertaining read.
Second, get luggage that works. Try it first. Make sure the bags you’re carrying are simultaneously secure and accessible when you need to make a grab for something.
Third, create a budget for the trip. Then add a lot more, because money goes fast.
Fourth, go on a social-tech diet. Bring an actual camera and a paper journal. Facebook, Tumblr, etc. can wait.
Fifth, take tours. They’re judged for being touristy, but you see and learn so much, not to mention it’s an easy way to meet people.
Sixth, EDINBURGH.
Lastly, traveling alone gets lonely. Be prepared for that. And by prepared, I mean take this opportunity to sit alone at a table at a restaurant without a book. Just order, eat and drink slowly, and be still. There are so few moments like this. Like exercise, they are exhausting, but they are incredibly fulfilling.
